Rising damp is moisture from the ground travelling up through brickwork by capillary action, usually because the property's damp-proof course (DPC) has failed, is bridged, or was never installed. It affects ground-floor walls up to around 1.2 metres and is treated by installing a new chemical DPC and replastering with salt-resistant render.

What is rising damp?

Many Worthing properties — particularly Victorian and Edwardian terraces near the seafront and town centre — were built with slate DPCs that have cracked with age, or no DPC at all. Ground moisture wicks up through the mortar like water up a paper towel, carrying ground salts with it. Those salts are why rising damp leaves its classic "tide mark" and why ordinary redecorating always fails: the salts keep absorbing moisture from the air.

Rising damp is also one of the most misdiagnosed problems in the industry — condensation and penetrating damp are regularly mistaken for it. That's why we always start with a proper survey, so you never pay for a DPC you don't need.

Signs of rising damp to look out for

  • A horizontal tide mark up to about 1 metre above floor level
  • Damp, salty patches that never fully dry out
  • Blown or crumbling plaster on lower walls
  • Peeling paint and wallpaper near skirting level
  • Rotting or lifting skirting boards
  • White fluffy salt crystals on the wall surface

Spotting one or more of these? Don't wait — damp problems only get more expensive with time. Book a free survey and we'll tell you exactly what's going on.

How we treat rising damp

Our proven process: we confirm the diagnosis with moisture profiling, then install a new damp-proof course — typically by injecting a high-strength silicone cream into the mortar bed, which cures into a permanent waterproof barrier. Contaminated plaster is removed and the wall is re-rendered with a salt-inhibiting system before a smooth skim finish, ready for decoration.

DPC injection is minimally disruptive, completed in days, and backed by our long-term written guarantee. Where floors or timbers have been affected, our floor damp and timber treatment teams restore them as part of the same project.

Rising Damp FAQs

Rising Damp — your questions answered

How do I know it's rising damp and not condensation?

Rising damp leaves a defined tide mark on ground-floor walls only and feels persistently damp at the base of the wall. Condensation causes surface mould — often on upper walls, ceilings and around windows. Our free survey uses moisture profiling to tell the difference definitively.

How long does a damp-proof course last?

A correctly installed chemical DPC should last the lifetime of the property. Ours are backed by a 10-year written guarantee as standard.

Can I treat rising damp myself?

DIY damp courses rarely work — the cream must be injected at the right height, depth and spacing, and the salt-contaminated plaster must be replaced or the damp will appear to return. Professional installation costs less than repeated failed DIY attempts.

How long before I can redecorate?

Walls need time to dry after treatment — typically around one month per 25mm of wall thickness. We'll give you an honest timescale and advise on breathable finishes for the interim.
